FASTING AND DETOXIFICATION
Intensive Course with Petra Carmichael
Fasting and detoxification can be an uplifting experience that enhances health and attitude, depending on why and how it is done. One may fast by eating nothing, eating a single food, or by eliminating one or more foods from the diet. The fast can last a day to several days, or for several weeks. Almost all modern affluent people need to fast from a lifelong daily schedule of three meals supplemented with between-meal snacks. Virtually every religious and healing tradition recommends fasting for therapeutic or spiritual advantages. Many of our primitive ancestors fasted. In the spring of the year when winter supplies ran low, they typically fasted one or more weeks on little more than water and spring greens. Contemporary fasting usually involves abundant fruit and vegetable juices. However, excessive fasting on juices can seriously impair the metabolic rate and digestive strength (agni), cool and weaken the body, and sometimes result in abnormal weight gain after the fast. To avoid these adverse reactions, the type of fast should be matched to the individual’s prakṛti.

ADVICE FOR GOOD FASTING
REASONS FOR FASTING
• To overcome emotional attachments to food.
• To cure physical and mental stagnancy, which manifests as poor appetite, apathy, fatigue, mental depression, and many other chronic ailments.
• For purification of the body before a change of diet to better one's health.
• As a seasonal cleansing: The foods eaten during summer and winter are more extreme. Some people find it beneficial to fast soon after the end of these seasons to make the transition smoother into the more moderate seasons of spring and autumn. Spring fasting, for example, rids the body of the heavy, fatty, and salty foods of winter and prepares it for the activity of summer. Autumn fasting eliminates the residues from excess sweet and cooling foods of the summer and prepares one for the storage season of the winter. An appropriate healing action to take in the autumn is the selected whole-grain or vegetable fast. High in fibre, this fast is particularly beneficial for the people with vāta aggravation.
• For spiritual reasons: To strengthen one's spiritual practice, prayer, or meditation; prior to and during times of ritual - for example, a wedding or an equinox ceremony; for special holy days.
• To enhance one’s mental awareness, sleep, and dreams.
